چکیده

Variable message sign (VMS) which is used for providing real-time information on traffic conditions and accident occurrences is an important component of intelligent transport systems (ITS). Proper consideration of drivers’ message reading time is necessary for designing VMS message phase and duration. The drivers’ message reading time depends on various factors, such as the number of information units, the number of lines, character height, drivers’ travel speed, and driver characteristics. In this study, a portable VMS (PVMS) using Korean characters was specially manufactured for the study of VMS message reading time, which has three lines with eight characters per line. Various field experiments were conducted using this portable VMS to obtain drivers’ message reading time with respect to the above causal factors. The relationships between the drivers’ message reading time and various causal factors were statistically tested by ANOVA. Also, regression modeling techniques were applied to develop an estimation model for drivers’ message reading time. By the final established model, it is shown that the message reading time is affected by the number of information units, drivers’ travel speed, gender and age group.

Evaluating the effects of bilingual traffic signs on driver performance and safety.

Variable message signs (VMS) can provide immediate and relevant information to road users and bilingual VMS can provide great flexibility in countries where a significant proportion of the population speak an alternative language to the majority. The study reported here evaluates the effect of various bilingual VMS configurations on driver behaviour and safety. The aim of the study was to deter...

Analysis of Visual Demands of In-Vehicle Text Displays Reveals an Age- Related Increase in Time Needed to Reallocate Attention to the Road

The purpose of this study was to evaluate age differences in the visual demands imposed by reading invehicle text message displays during simulated driving. Visual demand was operationalized in terms of five eye gaze data parameters. Sixteen young (mean age=20) and 16 older (mean age=77) licensed drivers served as participants. They were required to read variable length text messages from a con...

decisions. Introduction Providing dynamic roadside information to travelers for improved decision making is a key element of congestion management.1 Currently, this is achieved on highways through the deployment of electronic variable message signs (VMS). The theory behind the use of VMS is that enabling drivers to make better route decisions will lead to less congestion delay and better utiliz...

This study is concerned with the safety risk of reduction of visibility on roadways. One way to improve safety under reduced visibility conditions (i.e., reduce the risk of visibility related crashes) is to improve drivers' behavior under such adverse weather conditions. However, there is lack of studies that attempted to better understand drivers' behavior at different traffic and visibility c...
